Ranji Trophy 2018 19: Avesh Khan takes 7/24, puts Madhya Pradesh on top against Hyderabad

Young pacer Avesh Khan registered his career-best figures of seven for 24, to help Madhya Pradesh bundle out Hyderabad for a paltry 124 runs on the first day of the fifth round Ranji Trophy Elite Group B match at Holkar Stadium in Indore.

Madhya Pradesh Captain Naman Ojha won the toss and opted to bowl first. Avesh provided an early breakthrough for his team by cleaning up opener Tanmay Agarwal for a duck in his first over. He continued to be a menace for Hyderabad with wickets at regular intervals, disallowing the middle-order batsmen from settling. Himalay Agarwal was the exception of the Hyderabad batsmen: he made an unbeaten 76-ball 69, his fluent knock laced with eight fours and two sixes.

As it happened

Avesh, who is part of the Delhi franchise in the IPL, took only three wickets in first two outings this season. But he bounced back with a seven-wicket haul in the third match against Punjab. He followed it up with another good performance, taking six wickets against Kerala in the next match. He has now taken 22 wickets and is the go-to seamer for Madhya Pradesh.

Avesh made his first-class debut for Madhya Pradesh when he was just 18-years-old against Railways in the 2014-15 season, but lost his place in the squad for the following season.

However, he caught the eye with strong performances in the 2016 Under-19 World Cup, which he finished as India’s highest wicket-taker in the tournament. This earned him his first IPL contract with Royal Challengers Bangalore, for which he played one match in the 10th edition of the T20 league before being bought by Delhi Daredevils ahead of the 2018 season.

He return to his state team in the Vijay Hazare Trophy last season, making his debut against Mumbai. He has featured regularly for Madhya Pradesh across all formats.
