Lionel Messi back in Barcelona training on Tuesday skipping U.S. tour

Ernesto Valverde singles out Barcelona debutant Arthur and outlines what he brings to the table after their ICC penalty win over Tottenham.
Tottenham fought back from two goals down in the Rose Bowl, but Barcelona earned the win on penalties, with Malcom burying the final kick.

Lionel Messi will return to Barcelona training on Tuesday but he will not join up with the club’s tour of the United States in San Francisco this week.

Messi will be joined at the club’s training base by Spain internationals Gerard Pique, Jordi Alba and Sergio Busquets as thoughts turn to the Spanish Super Cup against Sevilla on Aug. 12.

They will undergo medical tests in the morning before taking part in a light session later in the day.

All four have been off for the last four weeks following their participation at this summer’s World Cup, which ended at the round-of-16 stage for both Argentina and Spain.

Goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen, whose Germany side failed to make it out of the group stages, flew out to Dallas on Sunday and is in contention to play against Roma in the International Champions Cup at AT&T Stadium on Tuesday.

Barca will then move on to San Francisco, where they meet AC Milan on Saturday, but there will be no more additions to the travelling party.

Messi, Pique, Alba and Busquets will remain in Spain, where they will continue to train ahead of the new campaign.

The six players that made it to the quarterfinals in Russia and beyond — Luis Suarez, Philippe Coutinho, Thomas Vermaelen, Ousmane Dembele, Samuel Umtiti and Ivan Rakitic — will return to training at a later date.

Colombian defender Yerry Mina, who also made a last-16 exit, is expected back later this week, although the club have not yet confirmed on which day.

Mina is the subject of interest from a number of clubs and could be on the move this summer as Barca look to cut down their pool of five centre-backs.

Meanwhile, left-back Lucas Digne has left the U.S to return to Europe in order to finalise a move to Premier League side Everton.
